Employee Wellbeing

Workplace Wellbeing relates to all aspects of working life, from the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work, their working environment, the climate at work and work organization. The aim of measures for workplace well-being is to complement Occupational Safety and Health OSH measures to make sure workers are safe, healthy, satisfied and engaged at work.

Employee wellbeing defined:

There is a need to keep employees healthier, which in turn could increase the length of time spent in the workforce and thereby assist with some of the factors such as the ageing workforce, the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work.

Occupational safety and health (OSH) addresses the safety and health of the workforce; while the ‘health’ aspect is as relevant as the ‘safety’ aspect in ensuring workplace wellbeing, at times this may not be reflected in the policies within organizations.

Reasons for concerns on employee wellbeing:

In the business world today, employee health and wellbeing is a key focus of some of the world’s most successful and innovative organizations. For companies, employee health and wellbeing isn’t just something they pay lip service to; they need to invest great time, energy and resources into creating workplaces that embrace wellness and consider it a vital part of business strategy.

That’s because time and time again, scientific studies have shown that the cost of not having a workplace wellness program is greater than the cost of implementing one.

There is concern that the global economic downturn as well as in our own country will adversely affect public health not only because of job losses but also because of the indirect effect on lifestyles and their effects on health.

Unemployment causes significant deterioration of mental health for people of all ages and especially for middle-aged men. Loss of employment and/or lower salary cause both loss of income and loss of status, both on behavior and mental health too.

Employers have a duty of care and this mean adopting a socially responsible approach to looking after their people. It is in the interests of employers to do so because this will increase the likelihood of their employees being committed to the organization and help to establish it as a ‘best place to work’.

  3. This article of great value now. This is because many companies have not yet focused on mental and emotional well-being at work. Employee mental health has a direct impact on how employees think and feel about their work and organization. However, some organizations took some time to notice this change.

  6. Non financial rewards such as health benefits, care on the family members of employees and giving vacations for employees should also be considered in order to motivate employees.

  7. Having a strong and well-adapted feeling of well-being can assist us in overcoming obstacles and achieving our life goals. Enhanced physical advantages, such as fewer occurrences of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and sleeping disorders, have been linked to increased productivity and creativity in both work and personal lives, according to research. In other words, being happy allows us to be the best versions of ourselves.
